What is a RIP and Why do I need a RIP?

In its simplest form, a RIP interprets the data from your file into a format that your printer can understand; this translated information tells your printer how to lay down the dots of ink to reproduce your file on the printed page. It’s important to understand that not all RIPs are alike. A RIP controls workflow, and depending on the power of the RIP, it can increase printing productivity, and reduce material costs through the enhanced layout controls. However, an underpowered RIP may slow down productivity and do little more than process information.

What is postscript?
Postscript is a programming language, developed by Adobe, optimized for printing graphics and text.Postscript technology is often called the language of desktop publishing. Its strength is its ability to handle the often complex text and graphics typical in graphic design and desktop publishing.
Adobe PostScript 3™ is the current level and has better graphics handling, supports more fonts, and speeds up printing.
