Study found that about 70% of printers are committed to sustainability initiatives

According to an NAPL study, despite the economic downturn, only 13.2% of printers are either cutting back or postponing their sustainability effort. While larger companies seem to have greater commitment, there was less difference on a geographic basis. Being green is not as simple as you think or as cheap as you think. Many printers are facing the challenge/disappointment in the process of getting different types of sustainability certification. Even though customers prefer working with green printers, they are not happy when the cost is passed along. You might say environmental issues have no impact on your business, but you can’t ignore the fact that more and more people are getting on board with this. So what can you do? Here are some simple solutions from RISO:

1. Reduce
a. E-waste: our printers are built to last and therefore reduce the amount of
e-waste that ends up in landfills
Scary fact! 2.6 million tons of trash is dumped every year in US landfills
b. Energy: RISO digital duplicators use 95% LESS energy than
photocopiers
Fact! Copiers consume the most energy of all types of office equipment and use power even when sitting idle.

2. Reuse
a. Set your printer and copier to automatically default to making two-sided
copies. If you do print on one side only, print on the back side of used
paper.

3. Recycle
a. We recycle our e-waste through reputable recycling companies
b. Choose recycled paper
c. We use Soy-based inks which contain lower levels of VOCs and produce
lower amounts of air pollution through the reduction of toxic emissions

RISO was ranked as the “most green” office products company in 2007. Our printers follow these simple steps that can support your company’s green initiatives while reducing costs and saving energy.

The latest in-plant trends you need to know

Last week, I attended a webinar series by Printing Impressions. Barbara Pellow from InfoTrends talked about current trends in in-plants. It was interesting to learn how in-plants are providing solutions to their customers with digital and software technology and how quickly they are adapting to these new changes. Without a doubt, in-plants are growing their profit while fulfilling their role as money savers for their organizations. Here are the trends in the in-plant Industry:

•The only growth is in digital
–300% increase in the number of establishments since 1998

•The cost of digital printing and software solutions continues to drop
–In-plants can print applications like VDP, and transpromo more affordably. In fact, 54.8% offer VDP in 2008 compared to 33% in 2004.
=> the trend we see here is investment to improve efficiency and effectiveness

–Longer-run applications can be moved to digital

•There is significant growth in digital color
InfoTrends forecasts that from now until 2012 digital color will grow at a 25% compound annual growth rate (CAGR)

•Investment in Software is increasing
–The benefit of digital printing is the ability to produce a variety of applications, like Graphic Arts, VDP, transactional VDP, and multi-channel communications. Despite the economic downturn the software market continues to grow at 8.8% CAGR

The most interesting part of the webinar was to see how Web-based services are becoming a key factor in order to run a profitable in-plant. Offering Web-to-Print service has grown from 27.9% in 2004 to 48.6% in 2008. Two thirds of buyers are using web-to-print services while only 11% of them were doing so in 2000. Here are some benefits of using web-based services.

•Increased efficiency
–From requesting jobs, to tracking and billing, real-time communication improves productivity. They can avoid confusion and unnecessary communications by having all the information online. Because the software is more advanced, not only can it produce customized products but it is also easier to operate.

–Increased efficiencies shorten turnaround times, make tracking easier, and reduce inventory. According to an InfoTrends study, print buyers saw 14.4% savings in terms of print purchases.

•Ability to track ROI from multi-channel marketing campaigns
–Imagine being able to do all of these things: sending a direct mail piece with Personalized URL, having a customer visit their PURL and fill out the information, then immediately receive a thank you email/mail, which is followed by a direct sales call, and being able to track the whole processes at each step.
Fact: The Response rate is 35% higher when multi-channel is used, as compared to print only (source InfoTrends).

•Increased margin
–Since the end users are uploading their files and submitting information, the accountability is moved to them, which limits costly mistakes and therfore increases margins.

•Promoting their marketing capabilities
–Seminars, blogs, etc., in-plants are using different tools to promote and educate their customers about how they can do ROI driven marketing campaigns.

Barbara mentioned that the demand for on-demand printing is equally important today as it was in 1990. The only difference is the Internet. Customers are benefitting from in-plants who offer web-based services to control what, when and how many they want to print. It is a big challenge for in-plants to shift from being just a print shop to a value added service provider. It takes a lot of planning to decide how much investment to put into new equipment and software, and what value to add to your in-plant. However, if it’s done right, there is a huge opportunity not only to run a profitable in-plant but also to grow your business.

RISO REDEFINES HIGH-SPEED LOW-COST DIGITAL COLOR WITH LAUNCH OF NEW INKJET PRINTERS

Revolutionary ComColor® series prints up to 150 color pages per minute for
about half the operating costs of comparable toner-based MFPs

Danvers, MA – June 17, 2009 – RISO, Inc., a leader in digital printing technology, today introduced its much-anticipated ComColor® series of full-color inkjet printer/MFPs to the North American market. With ComColor’s print speeds of up to 90-150 ppm (A4), RISO continues its claim of providing “the world’s fastest cut-sheet inkjet printers.”

“There is an unfulfilled demand for faster, more reliable digital color at less than three cents per page,” said Todd Deluca, President and COO of RISO, Inc. “In today’s economy, organizations are actively seeking some new breakthrough in truly affordable printing technology. While many industry observers say that the future of production printing is inkjet, RISO provides that breakthrough today with our unique and powerful ComColor high-speed inkjet printers.”

Five new models comprise the ComColor printer line, which employs RISO’s FORCEJET® imaging system and a robust piezo drop-on-demand inkjet technology designed for production environments. The ComColor 9050, 7050, 7010, 3050, and 3010 models are distinguished by print speed, image area, paper source capacity, and accessory compatibility. These five new models are designed to appeal to a broad range of customer print volumes, applications, and budgets. VDP color applications ideal for ComColor include transactional and transpromo documents, direct mail, booklets, value-oriented marketing collateral, and more.

In addition to color applications, these inkjet printers are extremely cost efficient in producing monochrome output, with an operating cost that can drop to less than a half cent per page. Considering that the majority of all cut-sheet page output is black and white, this low page cost is very beneficial to high-volume users. ComColor offers the unique value of a single device that competes aggressively with low running costs of high-speed monochrome printers while also offering low cost color.

“Our customers will view the ComColor series as the fastest, leanest, toughest, greenest inkjet printers on the planet,” said David Murphy, Vice President of Marketing for RISO, Inc. “With the ability to reliably produce 500,000 pages per month, ComColor is a truly unique digital color print solution for organizations looking for high speed and low total cost of ownership (TCO). Add in ComColor’s versatility, intuitive operation, security and environmental features, and these inkjet printers offer customers something not available with comparable toner-based production printers.”

With their low power consumption, streamlined design, and operating costs at about half that of comparable photocopiers, ComColor printers are energy efficient, easy to use, and very cost efficient. All five models are ENERGY STAR rated and offer printing, scanning and copying capabilities.

The ComColor series expands on RISO’s previously introduced HC series inkjet printers, which the company will continue to market as an active product offering. The ComColor product will be available throughout the Americas in a launch schedule to be completed over the next few weeks. RISO provided a preview of these printers to print industry editors and leaders today during the PRINT 09 Media Days in Chicago, IL.
