How we choose to communicate affects the environment: but the choice is far from clear

“Save a tree.” We hear this all the time, usually right before we press the “print” button. We all work really hard to reduce the amount of printing waste, but the truth is we need to consider reducing our electronic communication also. In an article titled Electronic vs. Printed Communication: The sustainability Battle, Blake Hutchison gives some interesting facts about paper and electronic communication.

One clear takeaway from this is that, while reducing the amount of paper we use is still good, we also need to think about conserving the electric energy we use as well.

A challenge for small mailers - Implementing IMB

Until now Print/Mail experts were encouraging the implementation of the Intelligent Mail Barcode to businesses, however the recent announcement of the postage discount made us think about whether it is really worth investing in, especially for small size mailers. According to Mailing Systems Technology, IMB applies a discount of only $0.001 for standard mail and $0.003 for first class.

The benefits for large mailers are obvious, and include the added ability to sort, track and do address correction. In the article, one of the biggest benefits from IMB is the ability to track checks in the mail so they can prevent needless processing of collections or cancellations. However, these advantages may not be necessary or worthwhile for smaller mailers.

To implement IMB, not only do you need to make an initial investment, but you also have to meet other requirements such as preparing IMB trays and container/pallet labels. Other things need to be taken into consideration, like the need for windows on remittance envelops, which can be costly if switching from non-window envelops.

So do small mailers have a choice? Unfortunately the answer is no. They might be able to hold off for a while but according to USPS, they are stating that all mailers must implement basic IMB by May 11, 2011 otherwise they will lose all automation discounts. You can read about this topic at Where is the Small Mailer Benefit?
